Reduce Moving Day Stress

Moving is stressful. Between the never-ending pile of boxes, endless to-do lists, and last-minute preparations - moving can be a rollercoaster that causes stress, headaches and back pain for even the most organized people. To help take the edge off, here are some simple tips to make moving day manageable: Create a checklist of everything that has to be done and its due date. Start the list up to two months before the move and keep the list on-hand so things can be added to it. Start packing early. Start with non-essential items. Put heavier items in small boxes and lighter items in large boxes. This distributes the weight more evenly and reduces the risk of back pain. Remember to bend with your knees when lifting. Pack a bag the day before the move with everything you'll need for the first 24 hours in the new house.
Include clothes, towels, toiletries and a small first aid kit containing Band-Aids. And for headaches and back pain, include some over-the-counter pain relief, such as those in the Tylenol or Motrin line. Enlist help. If you have family and friends who are able to lend a helping hand, take them up on the offer. Many hands make for light work, and can make the task of packing and unpacking much more enjoyable. Know your mover. Make sure you check the background of the mover you have hired and call a week in advance to confirm you appointment. Make certain you are present at all times to supervise the movers. Unsupervised movers tend to forget whats going if they are not taking everything. Turn down the thermostat on the furnace/AC, make certain all-interior water taps are turned off, check the outdoor taps to make certain they are turned off and always take a final reading on the gas, water, and electricity meters.
The last thing you need is a huge power bill from your old house. Also when arriving at the new house check the washers drain and make sure there are no leaks. Floods = big $$$ in repairs. Before the movers leave for the destination check the basement, attic, storage shed, and each room for missed items also check all closets, drawers, cupboards, and crawl spaces. Leave all keys and garage door openers on the counter or with the real estate agent. Check all windows, turn off all lights and lock up.An open house is a temping target for copper thieves and vandals. Some of these tips may seem simple but its always better to be proactive than reactive when it comes to your valuables and your time.
